Assembling new furniture qualifies for the tax credit

Here is a distinction few people know. Assembling new furniture in the home counts as ordinary household work and qualifies for kotitalousvähennys. Dismantling and reassembling old furniture during a move does not (ruling KVL 51/2000).

For 2026 the credit is 35 % of the labour cost, up to 1 600 euros per person, with a 150 euro own-liability. A rise to 40 % and 2 100 euros has been proposed for 2026–2027.

Example: assembling kitchen units, 360 €. After the own-liability, 210 € remains, of which 35 % — 73.50 € — comes back. If you order assembly alongside a move, ask for an itemised invoice, otherwise no credit is granted at all.

Four mistakes that cost an hour or two

  • Panel facing the wrong way. The finish is on one side only, and reversed it leaves the plugs visible.
  • Bolts tightened by hand only. The supplied hex key is too small — a month later the unit wobbles.
  • Fittings not sorted. A PAX has 47 different parts; ten minutes of sorting at the start saves an hour halfway through.
  • Doors fitted before understanding the hinges. PAX doors adjust, but you need to know what each of the three screws does.
The PAX manual runs to 84 pages and 47 fittings. A fitter assembles a three-section wardrobe with doors in two hours.

Wall fixing is not optional

Tall wardrobes, chests and shelving must be fixed to the wall. This is not caution, it is the manufacturer's instruction: a toppling wardrobe is a real hazard, especially with small children in the house.

The fixing depends on the wall. Concrete and brick take a plug and screw; plasterboard needs a cavity fixing or attachment to the stud. Tell us the wall type in advance so we bring the right hardware.

In rented accommodation, check drilling with the landlord. It is usually allowed provided the holes are filled on moving out.

What we need from you

  • The furniture on site with packaging accessible
  • Where it goes and which way the doors should open
  • The wall type, if wall fixing is needed
  • Clear space for assembly — roughly twice the footprint of the item
We do not take packaging away unless agreed separately. We leave cardboard and plastic stacked tidily for you to take to recycling, or we can arrange removal.

Frequently asked questions

How much does assembling an IKEA PAX cost?

A three-section PAX with doors usually takes 2–2.5 hours, so 90–113 euros. More sections, drawers or internal shelves add a little time. The minimum booking is two hours.

Does assembly qualify for the tax credit?

Assembling new furniture does — it counts as ordinary household work. Dismantling and reassembling old furniture during a move does not. For 2026 the credit is 35 %, up to 1 600 euros, with a 150 euro own-liability.

Do I need to buy tools?

No. The fitter brings their own. If extra screws or wall plugs are needed, tell us the wall type in advance and we will bring them.

Do you assemble brands other than IKEA?

Yes. Jysk, Sotka, Asko, BoConcept and any other. The instructions differ, the principle is the same.

Do you fix furniture to the wall?

Yes, and we recommend it for anything tall. Tell us the wall type — concrete, brick or plasterboard — and we will bring the right fixings.

Do you take the packaging away?

By separate agreement. By default we leave cardboard and plastic stacked tidily for you to take to recycling.

Customer Reviews

★★★★★

Ordered assembly of a PAX wardrobe with three sections and interior drawers. The assembler finished faster than I read the instructions. Everything is straight, hinges adjusted, nothing creaks. 2 hours of work.
